With a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and security, Alexi combines expert human insight with advanced AI to provide top-tier legal analysis, making it an indispensable tool for modern law practices.

Favorite law firm use cases: Legal research; Crafting legal arguments; Drafting e-mails and documents; Answering questions about the law, procedure or strategy, geared towards litigators.

Features & Functionality

Alexi shines in its ability to streamline and enhance the legal research process for law firms of all sizes. At its core, the platform offers custom research memos tailored to the specific legal questions users submit. Lawyers simply pose a question, often one that would typically require hours of manual research, and Alexi delivers a comprehensive, detailed memo supported by relevant case law, statutes, and legal commentary. This core product feature was the main focus of Alexi at inception, so focused development by their team has led to a strong output.

The user experience is intuitive and user-friendly, which makes managing multiple research requests straightforward. The initial dashboard you see after log in is a clean interface that quickly teaches you how to prompt a research memo. I used a copyright infringement prompt that I knew would require a fair use analysis to test the results.

A significant highlight of Alexi is its impressive breadth of legal sources. It taps into an extensive library of case law and statutes. Whether dealing with a straightforward question or a more nuanced legal issue, Alexi’s research will pull from the most relevant and authoritative legal sources. In my test case, I was impressed by the results of the initial memo I asked the platform to draft. A PDF of the memo was generated for download within a minute. It ended up being 24 pages and was a solid first draft. I looked at the case citations and checked all of them for accuracy. Though they were all accurate, a better final version would require me to elaborate on the use in a political campaign. So it was only a first draft, and not final product. As I’ve mentioned in previous newsletters, this is to be expected. Always consider drafting support tools to be a strong starting point, but not a generator of final versions of a document. I appreciated that the draft memo was careful to disclose in an opening section that you should always verify the output. They also confidently state that the case law passages and citations are accurate. It was a mark of integrity. You can see it below.

The interface is designed to keep things organized, allowing users to track their ongoing queries, access completed memos, and quickly follow up on previous research, ensuring that nothing falls through the cracks and research remains accessible and well-archived. Additionally, Alexi’s collaborative features are designed to fit seamlessly into a law firm’s workflow. Teams can share, comment on, and store research memos directly within the platform, facilitating better communication and collaboration among lawyers working on the same case. This function not only fosters teamwork but also enhances the efficiency of handling large volumes of research.

Alexi’s memo drafting feature, however, is just the beginning of what Alexi can offer. This October they are releasing their new version that adds to the memo generation feature and adds argument generation and a chat feature. These are natural extensions of the core legal research product. Additionally, the memo generator gets a nice facelift with a Pro memo feature. I won’t review the Pro memo feature here, but I will mention that it is not a fully AI product. The Pro memos are reviewed and edited by Alexi’s in house legal team for more accurate precision and delivered 24-48 hours from the time you enter your prompt. You are under no obligation to use the Pro memo feature. But it is a unique offering I have yet to see from any of the A.I. enabled platforms.

The Arguments feature references the same database of legal sources, but suggests possible ways a litigator might shape a legal arguments for use in briefs, pleasing, motions or oral arguments. I enjoyed the structure featured in the demo and can see the ease of use.

The chat feature also references the same database of legal sources used for the memo drafting tool and arguments feature. Naturally, Alexi built a chatbot that looks and feels like what you might experience using ChatGPT, Claude, or any other large language learning model. Based on the database Alexi already has in place, the chat feature promises to be accurate and useful.

Alexi stands out for its ability to deliver comprehensive and well-supported legal research memos in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional methods. Its intuitive dashboard allows for easy management of multiple requests, while the extensive database ensures that research is thorough and reliable. The platform’s collaborative tools further enhance teamwork within law firms, making it a versatile solution for both solo practitioners and larger teams. And wth the forthcoming Arguments and Chat features, Alexi makes legal research into an efficient and seamless process and is a tremendous asset to litigators of all types.

Pricing & Plans

Alexi offers tiered pricing options, with plans starting at $299 per month for 1 user, designed for solo practitioners. You get unlimited use of the A.I. products which is a good value (currently they do not charge extra for higher usage). Pricing for up to 10 lawyers goes up from there to $499/mo for up to 5 users and $799/mo for up to 10 lawyers. I think this price scaling is a even better value (though they put a cap on memos generated using their upgraded memo drafting tool). Law firms with over 10 attorneys can negotiate custom enterprise deals. While it’s certainly an investment, the time saved on legal research—often the most laborious part of practice—makes the pricing reasonable for mid-sized firms or larger. Solo practitioners may find the entry-level cost steep, but the value in efficiency may make it worth the consideration. And I will caveat that this product really should only be an option for litigators, as opposed to transactional practitioners. And I have great news for anyone considering the product. Alexi offers a 7 day free trial. This is a great option. As I’ve said a few times, free trials are a tremendous opportunity to test the features considering the prices for A.I. enabled products.

What Makes It A.I. Enabled?

Alexi doesn’t just rely on traditional search algorithms or only on existing Large Language Model (LLM) models. It uses machine learning to enhance its legal research capabilities, overseen and maintained by legal editors, optimizing the accuracy and relevance of the outputs. Over time, it learns from user queries and outputs, refining the types of resources it pulls from and the precision of the analysis provided. The combination of LLM A.I. and human expertise offers a solution that balances machine efficiency with expert-level insight—making it much more than just a legal search engine. They have a great article where they expand on what makes their product unique and A.I. enabled.

Security & Privacy

Alexi is built with client confidentiality in mind. The platform uses encryption to safeguard all queries and memos. More importantly, Alexi’s policy is clear: it does not use client data to train its AI models, ensuring that sensitive client information is not exposed or mishandled. The platform’s strong focus on privacy makes it a reliable option for law firms concerned with maintaining compliance with confidentiality and data protection regulations. Their privacy policy can be reviewed here.

The Judgement

Alexi is a powerful legal research tool, especially for litigation based firms that frequently tackle complex legal questions. Its AI-backed research support drastically cuts down the time required for legal research, delivery helpful draft memos, maintaining a high level of accuracy and insight. While the price may give smaller firms pause, the potential for increased productivity and reduced time spent on research may justify the investment. In short: Alexi is a must-try for litigation firms looking to modernize their legal research capabilities.
